MAD Theatre of Tampa is excited to announce auditions for our 2026 production of Spring Awakening! This show is directed by Drew Eberhard and music directed by Nathan Daugherty. This production will take place at the Tropical Home Art Gallery in Ybor City from October 9 – 18, 2026. All roles are unpaid.

SPRING AWAKENING- CHARACTER BREAKDOWN (MAD Theatre 2026) MALE ROLES
All male roles have to be able to go into falsetto.
MELCHIOR
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: G2 – G4 (Rock Tenor)
Atheist, radical and highly intelligent who refuses to bow down to society’s rules. A free thinker, his parents allow him to read whatever he wants so he is educated in other
topics his school don’t teach him, such as religion and sexual reproduction. He is
aggravated by the oppression and close-mindedness of this world.
Cynical, confident and disheartened.
*** Violent situations, simulated sexual acts, and partial nudity are a part of this role.***
MORITZ
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: B2 – A4 (Rock Tenor)
Melchior’s best friend. An anxious, sweet, and sensitive young man who is struggling through this time of new awakenings. Bad at school, deeply affected by new desires, and trying to live up to high expectations from his parents end up being too much for him, so he decides to end his life.Volatile, emotional and loyal.
***Simulated suicide is a part of this role.***
HANSCHEN/RUPERT
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: Ab2 – D5 (Baritenor)
Easily the most comfortable with his sexuality in this group of boys. A confident, comfortable young man who chooses to manipulate the status quo instead of challenging it, such as Melchior.
Is interested in both men and women and aggressively goes after Ernst to satisfy his desires. ***Simulated masturbation is a part of this role.***

ERNST/REINHOLD
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: Ab2 – A4 (tenor)
A sweet, and shy young gay man that is attractive to Hanschen,but too scared to make the first move. He feels deeply and tells Hanschen he loves him very quickly. Falls in love with Hanschen.Shy, tentative and longing. ***Intimate Moments with another Man is a part of this role.***
GEORG/DIETER
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: Ab2 – D5 (Tenor)
A funny and energetic young man that is in lust over his piano teacher and open about his sexual desires.
OTTO/ULBRECT
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: Ab2– D5 (Tenor)
Schoolmate confused by his inappropriate sexual fantasies. Boisterous, loud and ambitious.
ADULT MEN
Vocal Range: D3-F4 (Tenor/Baritone/Bass)
An older looking actor preferred. Plays all the adult male roles that range from a hateful headmaster, multiple fathers, a preacher, stern teacher, and doctor. Must be comfortable playing many
characters. Fewer singing skills are needed for this role.We require an actor to be able to quickly adopt varying roles as there are several varying roles to cover.

Unaware of female reproduction as she is constantly lied to by her mother.An impassioned young girl that is awakening to her sexuality and the harsh realities of the world.
Instinctually searching for anything that fills the void of these new desires and can grant her any relief. She journeys through the consequences of new passions in a closed
society. Falls in love with Melchior.*** Violent situations and simulated sexual acts are a part of this role.***
ILSE
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: E3 – E5 (Mezzo-Soprano)
She was abused by her father and cast out on the streets. She is bold, resilient, and upbeat despite her circumstances. She is living in an artist colony and stuck in a new cycle of abuse. Her and Moritz could have had a relationship in another life.Free-spirited, wistful and wise.
MARTHA
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range E3 – E5 (Mezzo-Soprano)
She faces constant physical and sexual abuse from her father, which her mother ignores. An intelligent, kind, and strong young woman that is made fun of for liking the less popular boys. Beaten and sexually abused by her father, but scared to be an outcast or kicked out of her home if she tells anyone.Strong-willed, melancholy and optimistic.
THEA
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: E3 – E5 (Mezzo-Soprano)
Wendla’s best friend. A schoolgirl who tries to stay innocent and pure.She is
sweet, energetic, and beginning to gain small crushes on boys like Melchior, but still trusting of her parents and the systems around her.Naïve, optimistic and afraid.
ANNA
Age: Appears 15 to 20
Vocal Range: E3 – C5 (Mezzo-Soprano)
Martha’s best friend. Uses her naivety to ignore the trials of Martha’s life. She is
lively and a touch more free spirited than her friends. Has a deeper understanding of the injustices happening. Wants’ to tell someone about Martha’s father, but is convinced by the girls not to. Oblivious, sweet and afraid.
ADULT WOMEN
